What is Medicare Advantage?
Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is another way to receive your Medicare Part A hospital benefits and Part B medical benefits. Medicare-approved private insurance companies offer these plans. Most include Part D prescription drug coverage. You remain enrolled in Medicare, but receive most covered services through your plan. The plan's network, costs, and coverage rules affect how you get care.
What should you compare before choosing a plan?
Start with the care you use and the providers you want to keep.
Your doctors and hospitals
Check the specific plan's network for your primary care doctor, specialists, preferred hospitals, and other providers. A provider accepting Medicare does not necessarily mean they participate in a particular Medicare Advantage plan.
Your prescriptions and pharmacy
Review each medication's coverage, dosage, restrictions, and expected cost. Check your preferred pharmacy, too; using a different pharmacy may change what you pay.
Your expected care
Look beyond the monthly premium. Compare what you would pay for specialist visits, hospital stays, outpatient procedures, therapy, and other services you expect to use.
Your travel and time away from home
If you spend part of the year elsewhere, check coverage for routine care outside the service area. Emergency coverage does not establish coverage for ordinary appointments while traveling.
Your existing coverage
Before changing employer, retiree, or other coverage, ask the benefits administrator how joining a Medicare Advantage plan could affect it.
How much does Medicare Advantage cost?
Your total cost depends on the plan and the care you receive. Review these amounts together:
| Cost | What it means |
|---|---|
| Medicare Part B premium | You generally continue paying this while enrolled in Medicare Advantage. |
| Plan premium | The monthly amount charged by the plan, if any. |
| Deductible | The amount you pay before certain coverage begins, when applicable. |
| Copayments and coinsurance | Your share of the cost when you receive covered services. |
| Annual medical out-of-pocket limit | The plan's limit on your share of covered Part A and Part B services, subject to its rules. |
| Prescription costs | Review these separately under the plan's drug coverage. |
A $0 plan premium does not mean $0 healthcare costs. You may still pay your Part B premium and costs when you use covered services.
Prescription drug coverage has its own cost rules. Ask the agent to explain the medical and prescription limits separately rather than treating them as one combined cap.
What types of Medicare Advantage plans are available?
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
You generally receive care through the plan's network, with exceptions such as emergency and urgent care. Many plans require a primary care doctor and referrals for certain specialist visits. Some offer limited out-of-network coverage.
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
You generally pay less when using network providers. Covered out-of-network care may be available at a higher cost. Check whether the provider will treat you under the plan and what you would pay.
Special Needs Plan (SNP)
These plans serve people who meet specific eligibility requirements, such as having certain chronic conditions or qualifying for both Medicare and Medicaid. Availability and eligibility depend on the plan.
Other plan types exist. An agent can explain which types are available among the plans CPIG represents in your service area.
Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement: how do they differ?
Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, works with Original Medicare. It is a different coverage approach from Medicare Advantage.
| Question | Medicare Advantage | Original Medicare + Supplement |
|---|---|---|
| How do I receive medical benefits? | Through a private Medicare Advantage plan. | Through Original Medicare, with a separate supplement helping pay covered cost sharing. |
| Which providers can I use? | Network and out-of-network rules depend on the plan. | Generally, providers who accept Medicare; Medicare SELECT policies have additional network rules. |
| How do I get prescription coverage? | Most plans include Part D. | Usually through a separate Part D plan. |
| How do I pay for care? | Plan premiums, copayments, coinsurance, and other costs vary. | Separate premiums and remaining costs depend on the supplement selected. |
| Can I use both together? | Medigap cannot pay Medicare Advantage cost sharing. | Medigap is designed to supplement Original Medicare. |
Before leaving one coverage arrangement for another, check effective dates and whether you have a right to obtain Medicare Supplement coverage without medical underwriting. Do not cancel existing coverage before the replacement arrangements are confirmed.
When can I enroll or change my plan?
You generally need Medicare Parts A and B, must live in the plan's service area, and must have an enrollment opportunity.
Initial Coverage Election Period
When you first become eligible for Medicare, you have a window to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan.
Annual Enrollment Period
October 15 through December 7 each year. Changes take effect January 1.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period
January 1 through March 31. If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may switch to another or return to Original Medicare.
Special Enrollment Period
Certain events, such as a move or loss of qualifying coverage, may create an opportunity. Timing and permitted changes depend on the event.
An agent can help identify the enrollment opportunity that applies to your situation.
