Instant Term Life Insurance

Explore term life insurance with a streamlined application process. Eligible applicants may receive a quick decision without a medical exam.

Understand your options, choose a coverage amount and duration, and confirm when your protection would begin.

Instant decisions and applications without a medical exam are available only for qualifying applicants and products. Additional information or a medical exam may be required. A quote or application does not mean coverage is active.

What is term life insurance?

Term life insurance provides coverage for a defined period. If you die while the policy is in force, it pays a death benefit to your named beneficiaries, subject to the policy's terms.

Beneficiary: A beneficiary is the person or organization you choose to receive that payment.

Your beneficiaries may use the money for expenses such as housing, household bills, education, or other financial needs.

What happens if I outlive the term?

The original coverage period ends. Depending on your policy, you may have renewal or conversion options, with deadlines and conditions.

Standard term life insurance generally does not build cash value or return your premiums when the term ends.

How the application works

What does "instant" mean?

Some insurers use accelerated underwriting to evaluate eligible applications more quickly. Underwriting is the insurer's process for deciding whether to offer coverage and at what price.

The process may use your application answers and information from authorized data sources. Some applicants can qualify without a medical exam; others need additional review.

Understand the three milestones

Quote

An estimated price based on the information provided

Underwriting decision

The insurer determines whether it can offer coverage and under what conditions

Active coverage

The insurer's requirements have been satisfied and coverage has taken effect under the policy

How you move from application to coverage

  1. Choose your coverage

Review the amount, duration, and affordable premium.

  2. Complete the application

Answer the questions accurately and review the required authorizations.

  3. Receive the insurer's decision

The insurer may approve the application, request more information, or decline it.

  4. Review the offer

Confirm the final premium, benefits, exclusions, and any added features.

  5. Confirm the effective date

Complete the insurer's payment and other requirements, and obtain confirmation of when coverage begins.

Do not assume you are insured because you received a quote, submitted an application, or received a preliminary decision.

Accelerated underwriting can reduce traditional examination requirements, but it still involves an assessment of the applicant. NAIC

Eligibility and medical exams

Who may qualify for an instant decision?

Eligibility depends on the insurance company and product. Your age, health history, tobacco use, requested coverage, and other application information may affect the decision.

An agent can help you understand which application options are available for your circumstances.

Does "no medical exam" mean no health questions?

No. An insurer may still ask health questions and review authorized information.

An application without an exam is different from guaranteed acceptance.

What if I need further review?

You may be asked for additional information, medical records, or an exam. Requiring further review does not automatically mean you have been declined.

If an instant-decision option is unavailable, ask whether another underwriting process or product is appropriate.

Choosing coverage and duration

How much term life insurance do I need?

Start with the financial support someone would need if you died. Then consider resources already available to them.

Household income

How much of your income would need to be replaced, and for how long?

Housing

Would your family need help with mortgage payments or rent?

Other obligations

Which debts or commitments would remain?

Caregiving

Would someone need to pay for services you currently provide?

Education

Are there future education expenses you want to support?

Existing resources

What savings and existing insurance could help?

Avoid counting the same expense twice. Review whether using an asset would leave your family short of money for another need.

How long should coverage last?

Match the term to the period when the financial need is expected to exist.

For example, someone may want protection while children depend on their income or while a mortgage remains outstanding. Available terms depend on the product and your eligibility.

Choose a premium you can maintain

A policy should fit your ongoing budget. Compare coverage needs with what you can comfortably pay over time.

Costs and policy comparison

What affects the cost?

Your premium can depend on your age, health, tobacco use, coverage amount, term length, and the insurer's underwriting requirements.

The final price may differ from the initial estimate.

Compare more than the monthly premium

Before choosing a policy, confirm:

  • The death benefit and coverage duration
  • How long the premium is guaranteed
  • What happens after the initial term
  • Any renewal or conversion options and deadlines
  • Exclusions and limitations
  • Optional features and their additional costs
  • The requirements for coverage to begin

What is a rider?

A rider adds or changes a policy benefit. Availability, eligibility, and cost vary.

Ask what it covers, when it applies, and whether using it could reduce the amount paid to your beneficiaries.

Considering term life insurance later in life?

Start with the reason you want coverage. You may have a spouse who depends on your income, an outstanding mortgage, or another financial responsibility.

Available terms, premiums, and instant-decision eligibility can vary with age and health. Ask which options are available to you before choosing a product.

What if my main concern is funeral or other final expenses?

Compare term life insurance with coverage designed for that purpose. Consider how long protection lasts, the premium, the death benefit, and any waiting period or benefit limitation.

A policy that ends before the need arises may not meet your goal.
